Freight Forwarders in Switzerland

October 8, 2026 7 min read

Switzerland is outside the EU customs union but sits at the centre of Europe, and that combination defines its freight market. Every commercial movement crosses a customs boundary in one direction or the other, and transit traffic moving between Germany, Italy and France passes through Swiss territory under formal procedure.

At IFN we connect shippers and forwarders with vetted, independent logistics companies worldwide through our freight network. This guide covers how freight moves in and out of Switzerland, who handles it, and what to check before you appoint a partner. If you are a forwarder based in Switzerland, the logistics network membership pages explain how to join and what you get.

The country is also a major hub for pharmaceuticals, precision engineering, chemicals, luxury goods and commodity trading, all of which generate high value freight with demanding handling standards.

What drives freight demand in Switzerland

Swiss freight demand is driven by:

  • Pharmaceuticals and life sciences. Basel and the surrounding region form one of the largest pharma clusters in the world, generating validated cold chain and high value air freight.
  • Precision engineering and watches. High value, small volume consignments move by air and road with security and insurance requirements.
  • Alpine transit traffic. Cargo between Germany, Italy and France crosses Switzerland by road and rail, much of it under transit documents.
  • Commodity trading. Switzerland is a global centre for commodity trading, which drives related logistics and documentation work.

Ports, airports and gateways

The main Swiss gateways:

  • Basel (Rhine ports): Switzerland’s only sea access via the Rhine, handling containers and bulk from Rotterdam and Antwerp
  • Zurich Airport: the largest air cargo gateway in the country, with strong connections worldwide
  • Geneva: a significant air cargo and road hub serving western Switzerland and the Lake Geneva region
  • Chiasso and Basel border crossings: the principal road and rail entry points for trade with Italy and Germany respectively

What moves in and out of Switzerland

Main exports: pharmaceuticals and chemicals, watches and precision instruments, machinery, medical devices, luxury goods and food products such as chocolate and cheese.

Main imports: machinery, vehicles, electronics, metals, textiles, food products and energy.

Switzerland requires careful customs thinking because it is not in the EU customs union or VAT area. Movements that look domestic within Europe are international events here, and transit documents must be discharged correctly to avoid duty exposure.

Practical notes for Swiss freight

Transit procedures carry real liability

Much cargo crossing Switzerland is not destined for it. Undischarged transit documents can trigger duty and VAT demands, so ask how transit is monitored and closed.

Road transit is expensive by design

The heavy vehicle charge applies to trucks crossing Swiss territory. Rail is actively favoured for Alpine crossings, so request intermodal pricing on Germany to Italy lanes.

Pharma needs validated cold chain

Swiss pharmaceutical exports require GDP compliant handling. Ask for validation documentation, monitoring and contingency plans for temperature excursions.

IFN members based in Switzerland

We currently have 2 IFN members in Switzerland, all individually vetted before admission and covered by our cargo payment protection programme:

Further partners can be found in the full member directory, and new Swiss members are added as they pass vetting.

Why Swiss freight forwarders join IFN

  • Global partners without the guesswork. Access more than 235 vetted companies in over 93 countries through the freight network, so you can quote lanes you do not cover yourself.
  • Protected payments. Cargo payment protection covers member to member transactions up to $30,000, which removes the biggest risk in cross border freight.
  • Inbound cargo. International partners route requests to the Swiss member who can handle them, so membership brings work in rather than only sending it out.
  • Visibility. A verified profile in the member directory and promotion through the IFN marketing channels.
  • Face to face business. Members meet each year at IFN Global Connect, where most long term partnerships actually start.
  • Clear rules. Every member accepts the code of ethics, and breaches are published, so quality is enforced rather than promised.

Membership runs from $750 a year. You can compare the tiers on the membership plans page, and the logistics network overview explains what the network does day to day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a reliable freight forwarder in Switzerland?

Use a vetted network. IFN members are screened before joining, carry cargo payment protection and accept a published code of ethics, which matters in a market with strict customs and pharma standards.

Does Switzerland have sea access?

Yes, through the Rhine ports at Basel, which connect to Rotterdam and Antwerp by barge. Everything else moves by road, rail or air across a customs frontier.

Why is road freight through Switzerland expensive?

Because of the heavy vehicle charge, which is levied on weight, emissions class and distance on Swiss roads, including for transit traffic. It is designed to push freight onto rail.

Need a Swiss freight partner?

Tell us your lane and cargo and we will introduce the Swiss member that fits. Swiss forwarders with pharma, transit or intermodal strengths can apply to join IFN.

Apply for IFN membership or compare the membership plans. You can also browse the member directory first, or contact the IFN team with your lane and we will tell you who covers it.
