Freight Forwarders in Spain

October 8, 2026 8 min read

Spain is a major European gateway with a unique position: it handles deep sea container traffic from Asia and the Americas, feeds the whole of southern Europe by road, and serves North Africa through the Strait of Gibraltar. Valencia, Algeciras and Barcelona are the three pillars of that trade.

Every member of the freight network we run at IFN is individually screened before joining, which matters when you are appointing an agent in a market you do not know well. This guide sets out how Spain works as a freight market. Spanish forwarders who want international partners can start with the logistics network overview.

Spanish forwarding is strong on reefer cargo, automotive supply chains and distribution into France, Portugal, Italy and North Africa, which makes Spanish partners especially useful for regional operations rather than single lane moves.

What drives freight demand in Spain

Spanish freight demand comes from:

  • Fresh produce exports. Spain is one of Europe’s largest exporters of fruit and vegetables, moving year round reefer volume through Valencia and Almeria.
  • Automotive manufacturing. Vehicle and component plants in Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon, Castile and Galicia create dense inbound and outbound flows.
  • Mediterranean transshipment. Valencia and Algeciras act as hubs connecting Asia and America services with European feeders and North African ports.
  • Chemicals and energy. Tarragona, Huelva and Bilbao handle petrochemical and industrial cargo, with project cargo for energy infrastructure.

Ports, airports and gateways

The main Spanish gateways:

  • Valencia: the largest container port in Spain and one of the busiest in the Mediterranean
  • Algeciras: the strategic hub at the Strait of Gibraltar, handling transshipment between continents and North Africa
  • Barcelona: the north eastern gateway serving Catalonia and southern France, with strong intra Mediterranean links
  • Madrid Barajas and Zaragoza: the main air cargo airports, with Zaragoza also a significant road and rail logistics platform

What moves in and out of Spain

Main exports: fruit and vegetables, vehicles and vehicle parts, machinery, chemicals and plastics, olive oil and wine, ceramics, steel and pharmaceutical products.

Main imports: crude oil and gas, electronics, textiles and clothing, machinery, iron and steel, chemicals and food products.

Spain competes as a distribution platform as much as a destination. If your goods are landing in Valencia and moving onward to France, Italy or North Africa, the forwarder’s road and feeder network matters more than the port itself.

Practical notes for Spanish freight

Reefer capacity is seasonal

Fresh produce volumes peak hard in winter and spring. Booking reefer equipment late in those windows costs money and sometimes costs you the slot.

North Africa adds a regulatory layer

Cargo crossing to Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia involves a separate customs regime. Confirm your forwarder handles both sides rather than only the Spanish leg.

Inland Spain is not cheap

Madrid, Zaragoza and Seville are long inland legs from the coast. Always check whether haulage and any transit time on the road are built into the rate.

Why Spanish freight forwarders join IFN

  • Global partners without the guesswork. Access more than 235 vetted companies in over 93 countries through the freight network, so you can quote lanes you do not cover yourself.
  • Protected payments. Cargo payment protection covers member to member transactions up to $30,000, which removes the biggest risk in cross border freight.
  • Inbound cargo. International partners route requests to the Spanish member who can handle them, so membership brings work in rather than only sending it out.
  • Visibility. A verified profile in the member directory and promotion through the IFN marketing channels.
  • Face to face business. Members meet each year at IFN Global Connect, where most long term partnerships actually start.
  • Clear rules. Every member accepts the code of ethics, and breaches are published, so quality is enforced rather than promised.

Membership runs from $750 a year. You can compare the tiers on the membership plans page, and the logistics network overview explains what the network does day to day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a reliable freight forwarder in Spain?

Use a vetted network with real screening. IFN members are evaluated before joining, covered by cargo payment protection and bound by a code of ethics, which makes disputes resolvable.

Which Spanish port should my cargo use?

Valencia for the east and centre, Algeciras for Strait of Gibraltar and North Africa traffic, Barcelona for Catalonia and southern France. Your forwarder should recommend based on final destination.

Can Spanish forwarders handle reefer and fresh produce?

Yes, it is one of their core strengths. Ask about reefer equipment availability during your shipping window and how they manage temperature monitoring in transit.
